Our other species
Horizon Seaweed is licensed to pick seventeen different varieties of seaweed native to the Caithness coastline. This includes the key species that we schedule into our harvesting plans, although there are many smaller species on our sites than can only be picked in limited volumes. Nevertheless, we can access a range of species from approved external suppliers (e.g. Irish moss, pepper dulse, laver / nori and sea lettuce). Months of wild harvest seaweed production
A decade of surveying shores around Scotland has given us a detailed knowledge of harvest seasons. Some species are only available for windows of a couple of months, whereas others can be picked almost year-round. There is always variation year-to-year: a mild winter can be an opportunity to harvest early, but autumn storms can bring a season to an early end. This is all part of working with nature, but we aim to begin harvesting a species when the rates reach commercial scale. Indicative seasons for our key species are given below.
